Art Unlimited______Art Basel’s must for monumental artworks
Inaugurated as an experiment in 2000, this annual exhibition has successfully made its mark on the first decade of the 21st century. This unusual platform bridges the traditional gap between art fairs and biennales by combining their respective qualities in a new format. More than a valuable complement to Art Basel, Art Unlimited is a distinctive event that enables artists to realize their most original and unusual projects. The exhibition comprises about seventy large-scale projects in a space covering 18,000 m2.
Art Unlimited’s principal aim is to display large-scale art projects – works of museum stature, projects that are complex and highly demanding in terms of format, sound, space, or light – in the best possible way. These works are sometimes spectacular, sometimes discreet and subtle, but are always magnificent pieces created by great artists. The projects are submitted by the galleries showing at Art Basel. Several of these works are realized on site by the artists. Art Unlimited is open to all types of support. It exceeds the limits hitherto imposed on the creative process for lack of space and time, or due to technical constraints. The exhibition of the selected works relies on a very open architecture. The spaces are designed especially for the works after a precise concept and lay out.
